Sustainability Analysis of Dispatcher Flight Routing Using Hybrid Fuzzy Method

Have you ever wondered who decides which route a flight actually takes? Pilots fly the aircraft, but the route itself is usually set by a profession most passengers never hear about: flight dispatchers. This study reveals just how much their decisions shape aviation's carbon footprint.
The goal was to build a hybrid fuzzy decision model comparing routing alternatives across seven dimensions: fuel consumption, CO₂ emissions, flight safety, cost efficiency, flight time, air traffic management compatibility, and passenger comfort. To do this, the researchers gathered input from 11 aviation experts in Türkiye — dispatchers, pilots, fuel planning managers, and operations officers.
The results showed Collaborative ATM-Integrated Routing as the most sustainable alternative, while standard, pre-filed routing ranked lowest. That's a meaningful finding: adopting a somewhat smarter, more dynamic approach to route planning makes a concrete difference in both fuel savings and emissions reduction.
The contribution of this research is that it moves the sustainability conversation in aviation beyond the usual talk of engine efficiency or alternative fuels, showing that everyday operational decisions sit right at the center of that conversation too. An everyday analogy: it's similar to a delivery driver choosing the most efficient route for the same package based on traffic and fuel use — except the route chosen here plays out at thousands of meters of altitude, with a far larger fuel budget on the line.
The study offers a concrete, applicable framework for folding dispatcher decisions into sustainability optimization as airlines push toward net-zero — meaning this isn't a theory that stays in the lab, but a decision-support tool airlines' own operations centers could put to use directly.
