Stress in Aviation and Disruptive Passenger Behaviors: Cabin Crew Attitudes

by HAVADER Editör Ekibi

Encountering a passenger trying to smoke on board, turning aggressive after drinking, or arguing loudly might be a fleeting, forgettable moment for you. But for the crew working that cabin, these moments recur again and again, building into a cumulative emotional load. This study, based on in-depth interviews with 18 cabin crew members from international airlines based in Istanbul, reveals what that load actually looks like.

The research had three goals: to understand how often and in what form disruptive behaviors occur, what emotional reactions they trigger among crew, and how adequate organizational support is in addressing them.

The findings show in-cabin smoking attempts, alcohol-related aggression, and seatbelt violations as the most common incidents, with the most severe cases escalating to physical assault. On the emotional side, there's a striking finding: crew members develop a kind of "emotional numbing" strategy to preserve their performance in the moment, suppressing their reactions rather than responding instantly. While this helps them get through the immediate situation, it can take a toll on communication and burnout over the longer term.

The value of this study lies in pointing toward how airlines should rethink crisis training: team resilience, procedural de-escalation techniques, and peer support emerge as the most effective coping strategies. An everyday parallel: it resembles an ER nurse managing a difficult patient or family member with the in-the-moment support of colleagues — not alone, but as a team.

In light of these findings, the study calls for a multi-tiered intervention model centered on employee psychological well-being — because cabin crew mental health isn't just a personal matter, but an organizational priority directly tied to flight safety.
