How Mindfulness Impacts Perceived Work Stress Among Air Traffic Controllers

Meditation apps have become a routine feature on our phones — but do concepts like "staying present" or "mindfulness" have real scientific backing in one of life's highest-stakes professions? This study tests that question on air traffic controllers.
Air traffic control demands constant vigilance, rapid decision-making, and a high level of resilience under time pressure, making it one of aviation's most demanding professions. These occupational demands often lead to elevated work-related stress, which can compromise not only individual well-being but organizational performance and aviation safety. This study's goal was to investigate the relationship between mindfulness and perceived work stress among air traffic controllers in Türkiye — an area with very limited research specific to controllers.
Survey data from 335 controllers selected through convenience sampling showed a significant negative correlation between work-related stress and mindfulness sub-dimensions such as observing, describing, acting with awareness, and non-reactivity to internal experiences. More concretely, the skill of "acting with awareness" — moving through a task fully focused on the present moment rather than on autopilot — was found to be a statistically significant predictor of lower work stress.
What this study contributes is turning a term that shows up constantly in pop culture — "mindfulness" — into a concrete, measurable performance and well-being factor. An everyday analogy: it's similar to how a driver focused entirely on the road, rather than glancing at their phone, both reduces their own stress and makes better decisions — being "in the moment" cuts down on the unnecessary stress that comes from divided attention.
In the end, this research shows air traffic control organizations that mindfulness-based training programs could be a concrete intervention tool for helping controllers cope with stress — supporting both controller well-being and, indirectly, the safety of air traffic itself.
