Analysis of Simulator Use in Pilot Training in Terms of Safety and Cost

Crash your car into a wall in a video game, and all you lose is a few seconds of gameplay. But testing an engine-failure scenario "live" on a real aircraft is both dangerous and extremely costly. Flight simulators fill exactly that gap. This study lays out, numerically and qualitatively, just how valuable that gap-filling is in aviation training.
The goal was to evaluate the role of flight simulators in pilot training from the perspective of flight safety and cost-effectiveness. To do this, national and international academic literature and regulatory documents were reviewed, and the effects of simulator-based training on pilot education were analyzed qualitatively.
The findings show simulator-based training reduces the need for real flight operations, delivering significant cost advantages in fuel, maintenance, and operational expenses. But the truly interesting finding is this: simulators aren't just "cheaper" — they offer a genuinely "better" learning environment for certain scenarios. Particularly for abnormal situations, crisis management, and decision-making scenarios, a pilot can safely experience situations they could never safely encounter in a real aircraft (an engine failure, severe turbulence) over and over in a simulator, with zero risk.
What this study contributes is showing that simulator investment shouldn't be seen merely as a cost-saving tool, but as a genuine safety enhancer. An everyday analogy: it's similar to a swimming instructor first teaching a student the basic strokes in a shallow pool — giving them a controlled environment to make mistakes and learn from them, before ever facing real waves at sea. In pilot training, simulators similarly let crews build the right reflexes for crisis moments without carrying the risk of a real flight.
In the end, this study offers aviation training institutions and regulators strong evidence that simulator investment is a win-win strategy — both economically and for safety.
